Typing posture

How to sit, where to put the screen and how to hold your wrists to type faster and without pain. A simple checklist.

A good position makes typing faster and keeps your hands, back and neck comfortable, even after hours at the keyboard.

Sit well

  • Feet flat on the floor, back supported by the chair.
  • Elbows bent at about a right angle, close to your body.
  • Shoulders relaxed: if they rise, your chair is too low or your desk too high.

Wrists and hands

  • Keep your wrists straight, bent neither up nor down.
  • Do not rest your wrists on the desk while typing: let them float, and rest them only during pauses.
  • Fingers slightly curved, touching the keys lightly. There is no need to press hard.

Screen and keyboard

  • The top of the screen at eye level, about an arm's length away.
  • The keyboard straight in front of you, with the G and H keys in line with your navel.
  • The keyboard feet folded in: a flat keyboard keeps your wrists straighter.

Take breaks

Every half hour, stand up, stretch your fingers and look into the distance for a few seconds. Short, regular breaks prevent fatigue far better than one long one.

Put it into practice

The lessons take you through the keyboard a few keys at a time, with a keyboard on screen that shows each finger.
