How is your score calculated?
- WPM (words per minute): every 5 characters you type correctly, spaces included, count as one word. Only correctly typed words count.
- Raw speed: the same count, with your mistakes included.
- Accuracy: the share of your keystrokes that were correct.
- Consistency: how steady your speed was from one second to the next.
What is a good typing speed?
Most people type around 40 WPM. From 50 WPM you type faster than most, from 70 WPM you are fast, and from 90 WPM very fast. Accuracy matters as much as speed: aim for 95% or more.
How to type faster
- Keep your fingers on the home row and type without looking at the keyboard.
- Slow down until you make almost no mistakes, then speed up.
- Practise a few minutes every day rather than one long session a week.
Choose your test
- Time: type for 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds. Thirty seconds makes a good warm-up; one or two minutes give a steadier score.
- Words: type 10, 25, 50 or 100 words and see how fast you finish.
- Text: type a complete short text instead of random words.
- Zen: type whatever you like, with no text and no limit.
Add punctuation or numbers to get closer to real writing. The difficulty sets the price of a mistake: in normal mode it only lowers your score, in expert mode a wrong word ends the test, and in master mode a single wrong key does.
Is this typing test accurate?
It uses the standard formula of typing tests: one word is five characters, spaces included, so long and short words weigh the same and your score can be compared with other tests. The clock starts on your first keystroke, not when the page opens. Take the test two or three times: your average says more than one lucky run.
Save, share and compare
Your personal best and your history stay in your browser, and a free, optional account keeps them on all your devices. At the end of a test you can share your result. With an account and a nickname, your 15- and 60-second tests in normal mode, without punctuation or numbers, can enter the verified leaderboards, where every keystroke is checked.
