Real writing has punctuation
A speed measured on plain lowercase words is flattering: real texts are full of capitals, commas and full stops. This test adds them, so your result is closer to the speed you actually type at.
- Use the little finger of the opposite hand for Shift.
- Do not pause before a comma: it is part of the word.
What you will type
The most common words of the language, with a capital at the start of each sentence, commas, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks.
Is it normal to be slower?
Yes: every capital and most punctuation marks need Shift or a key far from the home row. Losing a few words per minute is normal. A big gap tells you that Shift and the punctuation keys are not automatic yet, and that is what this test trains.
More tips
- Release Shift as soon as the capital is typed.
- Type the space after a comma or a full stop without a pause: it belongs to the same movement.
